What sets us apart

The Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS specializes in microstructure diagnostics and design. In the business unit “Materials and Components of Electronics”, the focus is on material and defect analysis in micro-, opto- and power electronics as well as sensor and microsystem technology. The institute offers expertise in the validation of electronic components, non-destructive diagnostics, defect localization, high-precision target preparation for electron microscopy, trace and surface analysis, thermophysical and electrochemical material evaluation, micromechanical material characterization as well as modelling and simulation. These methods are continuously developed and adapted to the growing requirements of the electronics industry.

The Fraunhofer IMWS supports the development and market launch of innovative technologies, improves manufacturing quality and increases the service life and reliability of electronic products. The experts in Halle (Saale) contribute their expertise in test development, analysis and evaluation of corrosion processes and degradation mechanisms. Particular attention is paid to the development of new test methods for investigating the influence of moisture on insulation materials, which have won awards at international conferences.

For more than 25 years, the Fraunhofer IMWS has been using diagnostic methods of non-destructive characterization and high-resolution analysis procedures to optimize the reliability and performance of electronic systems. Experimental test methods and numerical simulations are used to analyze and evaluate the behavior of materials under various loads.
