To cope with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the Covid-19 disease caused by the virus, an adequate protective equipment is crucial. The product spectrum ranges from disposable mouth-nose covering to surgical masks and particle filtering half masks. In a recent material and performance study of protective masks, Fraunhofer IMWS provides a comprehensive material science investigation of the morphological properties and evaluates further research methods. In this session, we will present first results in the investigation of functional characteristics such as breath resistance, filtration efficiency and leakage as well as speech intelligibility and reusability. We will also give an overview of the methods available at Fraunhofer IMWS and introduce our capabilities to assist our customers with certification as well as individual development.
