Multigraft copolymers consisting of an elastomeric polyisoprene backbone and multiple polystyrene grafts are innovative thermoplastic elastomers. Their high elasticity in combination with adjustable tensile strengths are favorable properties for the use in medical applications or food technology. Fraunhofer IMWS has developed scalable synthesis routes and a detailed understanding of structure property relations. In this session, we will present results of recent research activities showing that the properties of such materials can be systematically tuned by blending three pre-defined multigraft copolymer components with suitable molecular architecture. This optimization strategy enables finding an application related compromise between mechanical performance and processability. In our session, we will also present special tests and selected examples demonstrating the potential of these novel materials for the use in medical applications.
